A Life Shaped by Clay

My journey into pottery began as a child, when I first picked up a piece of clay and created a small house I still have today. That piece has stayed with me through every stage of life—a reminder of where it all began and a testament to the lasting nature of pottery.

Finding My Way Back

Like many, life became busy with family, responsibilities, and work—but the desire to create never left. While living in regional New South Wales, I returned to pottery through community classes, where I rediscovered my passion and began refining my skills.

What started as a weekly class quickly became something more. I spent countless hours learning, experimenting, and developing my techniques—guided by mentors, books, and hands-on practice.

Honest, Handcrafted Pottery

Each piece is individually wheel-thrown or hand-built using Australian stoneware clay and fired to high temperatures for strength and durability.

My aim is to create genuine, functional pottery—pieces that are made to be used, appreciated, and not mass-produced.

Where It All Began

  • My journey into the love of pottery began early in primary school. The first time I was given clay, I was hooked. One of the first pieces I made was a small pottery house, which I still have today.

That little house has stayed with me through countless moves, children, pets, and all of life’s bumps along the way. It’s a reminder of where it all began—and a testament to the longevity of pottery.

Learning the Craft

  • Later, while living in Gunnedah in regional New South Wales, I found my way back to pottery while at home with my children. Wanting something that was just for me, I enrolled in community pottery classes—and that’s where everything reignited.

There, I met a wonderful potter named Pat, who generously shared her knowledge and guidance. Wanting to learn more, I joined the local pottery club, giving me access to a wheel and space to practise.

I spent hours teaching myself through books, experimenting, and refining my techniques. Over time, I developed a deep understanding of the process—from forming and shaping to firing and glazing—learning just as much from mistakes as successes.

Life, Work & Returning to Clay

  • As life evolved, I stepped away from pottery to return to the corporate world as a single mum. Years later, after being made redundant, I took the opportunity to return to what I had always loved.

That turning point led to the creation of Pure Pottery—a space to fully embrace creativity, reconnect with the craft, and build something meaningful.

Inspiration

Inspired by Nature, Shaped by Hand

Pure Pottery is based on a small property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, surrounded by sub-tropical forest, rolling hills, and native wildlife.

Much of my work is inspired by the natural environment—the land, sky, and sea. From star-filled night skies to the colours of nearby coastal landscapes, these elements often find their way into my pieces.

Working with clay is an immersive process. It’s ever-changing, fluid, and expressive—offering endless possibilities with no single set of rules.
